MVP: Most Valuable Player

Everyone always wants to be the most valuable player. At least when I went to school and watched my friends play intercollegiate sports I know they aimed to be the best. Each day they would get up train like beasts and perform like such on the court.

The MVP is the player on a sports team who has performed best in a particular game or series of games. MVP is an abbreviation for 'Most Valuable Player.'

Since 1955 the National Basketball Association (NBA) has been awarding this award to it’s season highest performer. To the player that dramatically pushes limits. The one individual who sets the highest standards. It’s the award every basketball player plays for. The basketball season is quickly rounding up. Games are quickly happening and the playoffs are approaching before we know it. April is the time when... starts to be the time when basketball fans start to wonder who will be the mvp of the season and get the so highly profiled award. Unless your my best friend on twitter, he’s already made his mind up.

Will it be the player who alone sets groundbreaking records, but does not necessarily exemplifies the best team playing basketball in the league? Will the award go to a young prolific guy who shows that taking the ball to the basket is still the best way to score points?

You already probably know who the front runners of this year’s race are. 24 year old, Milwaukee Buck’s foward Giannis Atetokounmpo who averages 27 points per game about 12 rebounds and 6 assist. We also have 29 year old Houston Rocket’s guard James Harden who averages 36 points per game, 2 steals and had a run of 32 consecutive games over 30 points a night.

So Pam what’s the comparison here. To my best friend it’s clear. James Harden deserves the MVP award and that’s that. Which to some extent I would agree but Giannis is putting up a good fight.

Yes, Harden is the “clear” mvp winner if all you solemnly care about is scoring. If to you isolation ball and points are the main reference of good playing. In isolation ball he averages 18 points which is more than half his nightly scores unless he puts up 50 which well then I’m sure it’s more.

In 2017-18 season Harden won the MVP award for again, showing out. He put on a game every night, he carried his team he did whatever he had to do to give his team the best chance it had. Which is admirable, I myself cheered him on and 100% believe he deserved the MVP.

This year Giannis has called my attention, perhaps because I have a different perspective than my basketball playing friends. I’m a strong believer and team, in aggressiveness in bringing the ball to the basketball and getting the rebounds for extra points! All these qualities which Giannis shows game in and out.

Giannis has also impacted the culture of Basketball in a city that didn’t have much hope. He’s made the front office excited for what’s to come. He’s helped the Bucks lead the board with the best record in the league (58-20). He is putting up raw stats that looks like prime Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. He’s brought a new meaning to Basketball in Milwaukee.

The question stands at what do you believe makes an MVP PLAYER? Because perhaps these two aren’t your front runners, maybe it’s Paul George after joining Oklahoma City and bringing back that tenacity and fire he displayed in Indiana once upon a time. Or maybe it’s Anthony Davis who also average 27+ points in 76 possessions.

Earlier today my friend said the Rockets will end 2nd in the West at the end of the season. As we wrap up these next two weeks and get ready for Playoffs, look out for what an MVP means to you.

Will it be bringing your team again to the playoffs on your back (HARDEN) or will it be continuing your prolific, powerful approach with your team in securing you stay in first place and finish there(GIANNIS).

My answer: GIANNIS WINS.
