Quarantine: Rodriguez Style

Oatmeal, Flour, Sugar, Vanilla, Butter, Eggs - Mix! Mix! Mix! My Quarantine has consisted of a lot and when I say a lot, I mean alot of baking! It’s been the one thing that’s kept me both busy but also made me happy. It’s given me a chance to come close to those I can’t be around.

I come from a family that hangs out weekly. The type that one household cooks and all of a sudden were 30 plus deep. We use any excuse to hang out on the weekends and share a cold beer or a glass of wine. Making this time extra hard because we miss birthdays, random Sundays and even our big Easter Hunt!

Even though we have been staying apart from each other we have used what always brings us together to do just that, stay together.

Through a combination of cooking and baking we have found ways to share our love! We have realized that though we can’t share these meals or treats together we can still share it through text and pictures.

I know all families are different and that is beauty. We all have our different ways of showing love but for my family food is definitely the love language. This comes directly from our beloved Grandmother who passed a few years back. She would bring us all together with a big pot of Sancocho or Rabo and so we’ve learned to do the same thing in her honor.

Through this Quarantine we have all found different things to do to share around each household. For example, one of my cousins found his love for making pastelitos and quipes! Each week he makes more and more. We all go around and share it to each household and then share a picture or a nice sentence on our family group chat to share our gratitude!

Easter was a sad day for me personally, I love Easter!!! It’s like Christmas but outside with eggs and not expensive gifts. The smiles are so pure and the love is so real. This year we couldn’t have our big egg hunt and Basket exchanges, instead I did a drive through Basket Drop off!! The goal is to always stay together and to remind our little ones who are as confused as us that even through the hard times we will stay together.

On my end I have made various treats, from oatmeal cookies to chocolate cake and put them in bags with a cute “we miss you, see you soon note”. It’s my way of telling everyone that this will soon be over and we will soon be in someone’s backyard drinking cerveza and making sancocho outside.

Below find some examples of things you can do to stay close to your family during this time!

  • Create baggies with cookies or cake and bring to your family's door steps.

  • For birthdays: create a zoom call, do a parade party!

  • Make a few extra portions for dinner and share with two or three households!

  • Send messages on your family group chats of hope and love and not all the negative fake news that we find everywhere.

Thank you for reading as always! I hope you and your families stay healthy and sane during this time.

Share what you and your family are doing during this time with me!!

xoxo
